Prawn crackers are absolutely delicious. Considering that my roots are in Kolkata and my love for seafood, this tasty starter really appeals to me. Prawn crackers come in many variations. As a kid we would buy these crackers which were prawn flavored and had a pink outline. I have not eaten them for a while. Imagine my surprise when I saw prawn crackers on the menu. All the childhood memories came rushing back. Fascinating thing about food: It is not something you just consume for the sake of survival and nutrition, since it is a sensory experience you have it lodged in your memory ,associating it with past experiences and emotions. This is what the prawn crackers did to me. They reminded me of a time when I was 5 years old and I would have dinner with my parents ,enjoying my rice , curry and a side of prawn crackers.
Coming back to Mamagoto, the prawn crackers were a little different when it came to color and texture. It was light brown throughout but , they were bursting with flavor. As soon as you take one crunchy bite, boooom!!! They explode in your mouth and you taste that prawn goodness. They were served with a side of Sambal as a dip. I personally believe they Sambal complemented the prawn crackers well. You have the salty ,fish and crunchy cracker against this flavorful tamaring chilli paste.
Aaah!! Squid rings. An exotic delicacy. Most places offer fried squid rings and season it with salt and pepper but, at Mamagoto you get fried squid rings tosses with spices. It adds an interesting flavor dynamic to the dish. Usually squid is hard to cook with and has limitations when it comes to dishes you can make. Moreover, when squid is fried it tends to become hard and rubbery. But, Mamagoto definitely does justice to this dish. No longer is chewing squid a chore. It becomes a lot easier to eat it.
After some amazing appetizers, I headed for Cantonese noodles for my main course. It shares similarities to its cousin, the chop suey whereas the chop suey uses deep fried noodles, Cantonese noodles uses pan fried noodles. So you have pan fried noodles with some thickened veg or chicken stock(based on your preference). The dish is a little on the mild side so, if you want to make it more flavorful, do not hesitate to add some soy sauce or red chilli paste. Plus Mamagoto provides you with sambal and I personally believe that the light tamarind flavor from the sambal adds an extra elememt to the Cantonese noodles. Incase some of you want to avert spices or have a palate that is more accustomed to less spicy food, do try out the Cantonese noodles.
After a long scrumptious meal, I let out a gentle belch of satisfaction and headed home a happy man. For all you Asian food fans I recommend you try out Mamagoto.
Happy Eating! !
